The short answer: the three tests (fee maths, checkout need, multi-store need)
Most UAE stores do not need Shopify Plus. Run three tests first. The fee test: if you process sales through a third-party payment gateway, Plus charges 0.2% per order where Advanced charges 0.6% — but that 0.4-point saving only covers the licence gap once you process roughly AED 1.84 million a month through that gateway (illustration below). The checkout test: do you need your own custom apps or interface blocks inside the checkout steps themselves? That is still Plus-only. The multi-store test: do you genuinely need separate storefronts for different GCC markets, brands or catalogues? If you fail all three, stay on Advanced. Our Shopify vs WooCommerce comparison covers the earlier platform decision if you are still at that stage.
Why you're being upsold — and what changed in 2026
Plus is an easy sell because the feature list sounds like growing up: more automation, B2B, a better checkout. Partners and peers repeat that list from older guides, and much of it is now out of date. In 2026 Shopify moved several headline features down to the standard plans, retired Scripts entirely on 30 June 2026, and finished replacing checkout.liquid with Checkout Extensibility. Shopify Payments in the UAE — previously a Plus-only route — also became available on the Advanced plan, subject to eligibility and onboarding checks. A recommendation written in 2024 will mislead you in 2026. The honest question is not "what does Plus have?" but "what does Plus still have that my current plan does not — and what is that worth in dirhams?"
What Plus still uniquely gives you (checkout extensibility, custom Functions, Launchpad, expansion stores, support)
Some advantages remain genuinely Plus-only. Checkout Extensibility is the biggest: only Plus stores can place apps and custom blocks on the information, shipping and payment steps of checkout, and only Plus gets the Checkout Branding API. Shopify Functions follow the same split — public apps built on Functions run on every plan, but a custom app containing your own Functions is Plus-only, so private discount, delivery or payment logic built for your store alone needs Plus. Launchpad, for scheduling sales, product drops and campaign changes in advance, is Plus-only. Plus also includes up to nine expansion stores under one contract, unlimited staff accounts (Advanced allows 15), higher API limits, and 24/7 priority support. If your checkout needs private logic or your team runs scheduled drops, this list is the real case for upgrading.

What is no longer Plus-only (B2B, Flow — the stale claims to ignore)
Two claims you will still hear are simply stale. First, B2B: on 2 April 2026 Shopify extended its foundational B2B features to Basic, Grow and Advanced at no extra cost. Standard plans now include company profiles, payment terms, volume pricing, quantity rules and up to three active B2B catalogs across your B2B markets, provided the store uses the new Shopify Markets. Plus still goes further — unlimited catalogs, catalogs assigned directly to companies and locations, and deposit and partial-payment options — but "you need Plus to sell wholesale" is no longer true. Second, automation: Shopify Flow is a free app on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus alike. A few Flow actions are plan-dependent, but everyday automation does not require Plus.
The UAE break-even: third-party gateway fees in AED, worked examples
Here is the calculation that decides Plus for most UAE stores. Shopify charges an additional transaction fee on orders processed through a third-party gateway: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus (the fee applies to third-party gateway orders even alongside Shopify Payments). Plus costs USD 2,300 a month on a three-year term or USD 2,500 on a one-year term, or a variable platform fee for more complex structures. Advanced costs USD 299 a month billed yearly. Using the three-year Plus price, the licence gap is USD 2,001 a month — approximately AED 7,350 at the AED–USD peg of about 3.6725 (conversions are approximate). The gateway saving is 0.4% of third-party sales, so break-even is roughly AED 1.84 million of monthly sales through a third-party gateway.

The following worked examples are illustrations built from those verified fee figures, not quotes:
| Monthly sales via third-party gateway (illustration) | Fee on Advanced (0.6%) | Fee on Plus (0.2%) | Monthly saving vs licence gap of ~AED 7,350 |
|---|---|---|---|
| AED 200,000 | AED 1,200 | AED 400 | AED 800 saved — far below the gap |
| AED 1,000,000 | AED 6,000 | AED 2,000 | AED 4,000 saved — still below the gap |
| AED 2,000,000 | AED 12,000 | AED 4,000 | AED 8,000 saved — Plus pays on fees alone |
Two cautions. Only sales actually processed through a third-party gateway count — if most orders run through Shopify Payments, your break-even is much higher. And stores on Basic or Grow face larger fee percentages, but jumping straight to Plus is rarely the answer; moving up one plan usually fixes the fee problem for far less. The GCC expansion-store case: when Plus genuinely pays
The second legitimate UAE reason to buy Plus is regional structure. A Plus contract includes your main store plus up to nine expansion stores — separate storefronts under one organisation, each with its own catalogue, theme and settings. That matters when GCC markets need genuinely different assortments, pricing models or legal setups: a Saudi storefront with its own catalogue and fulfilment rules, or a dedicated B2B storefront alongside retail. Expansion stores are not needed for currency, language or domain differences alone — Shopify Markets, on standard plans, handles local currencies, Arabic storefront content and regional pricing inside one store. Choose expansion stores when the products, brand or way of selling differ by market. Each still needs its own theme licence and setup work.

Costs beyond the licence (apps, development, maintenance)
Budget beyond the monthly fee. Apps do not get cheaper on Plus, and Plus stores often spend more because more is possible: checkout extensions, Functions development, Launchpad setup and multi-store management all need developer time. There is also a migration task most stores face regardless of plan: anything built on Shopify Scripts stopped running on 30 June 2026, and checkout.liquid customisations are no longer supported, so legacy logic must be rebuilt as Functions or public apps. Finally, a three-year term commits you — check the downgrade and exit terms before the discount persuades you. Our e-commerce development service page explains how we scope this work.
Decision criteria: stay, upgrade, or downgrade — by store profile
Stay on Advanced if you sell mainly to UAE retail customers, use three or fewer B2B price lists, process under roughly AED 1.8 million a month through third-party gateways, and need no private logic inside checkout. That describes most growing UAE brands.
Upgrade to Plus if you pass one test decisively: gateway fees alone exceed the licence gap, you need custom Functions or checkout-step extensions, you run scheduled drops with Launchpad, or you operate genuinely separate GCC storefronts.
Consider downgrading if you joined Plus for B2B or Flow before April 2026, never used the checkout or expansion features, and your gateway volume sits below break-even. Those features now exist on Advanced; paying Plus prices for them is a legacy habit. Check your contract term first, and test the B2B catalog limits before you move.
Common mistakes
- Upgrading for B2B or Flow, which standard plans now include.
- Running the break-even on total sales instead of only the sales processed through a third-party gateway.
- Comparing the Plus licence with Advanced but forgetting app, development and theme-licence costs for extra stores.
- Repeating a local guide's Plus price without checking Shopify's published floor of USD 2,300 a month on a three-year term.
- Signing a three-year term before checking how exit and downgrade work.
FAQ
How much does Shopify Plus cost in 2026?
Shopify's Plus pricing page lists USD 2,500 a month on a one-year term and USD 2,300 a month on a three-year term, or a variable platform fee for more complex business structures. Apps, development and payment processing cost extra.
Is B2B available without Shopify Plus?
Yes. Since 2 April 2026, foundational B2B features are included on Basic, Grow and Advanced, with up to three active catalogs across your B2B markets. Plus removes the catalog limit and adds direct catalog assignment to companies and locations, plus deposits and partial payments.
Can UAE stores use Shopify Payments?
Yes, subject to eligibility and onboarding. Shopify's changelog records that Shopify Payments in the United Arab Emirates, previously available only on Plus, became available on the Advanced plan. Stores on Basic or Grow still need a third-party gateway, and orders through one still attract Shopify's additional transaction fee.
Do I need Plus for Shopify Flow or custom discounts?
No for Flow — it is free on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus. For discounts, public apps built on Shopify Functions run on standard plans; only a custom app containing your own Functions requires Plus.
What happens if I downgrade from Plus to Advanced?
You keep your store, products and data, but lose Plus-only features: checkout-step extensions and the Branding API, custom Function apps, Launchpad, expansion stores and unlimited B2B catalogs. Check your contract term first, and confirm your B2B setup fits within three catalogs before switching.
