Sable & Smoke — Fine-Dining Restaurant Website
Dark editorial site for Sable & Smoke, a fire-driven fine-dining restaurant — moody photography, dish storytelling, and a reservation flow built to fill tables.
Challenge
Sable & Smoke is a candlelit, fire-driven restaurant competing for attention in a crowded New York dining scene, where most restaurant websites look alike: bright stock photos, cramped menus, and reservation flows buried three clicks deep. The site needed to feel like the room itself — dark, warm, unhurried — while doing real business work: turning a visitor's curiosity into a confirmed reservation as quickly as possible. It also had to carry a strong brand story (open flame, seasonal produce, a named chef) without inventing a single false claim.
Approach
We designed around the sensory experience of an evening at Sable & Smoke. The visual language is dark premium editorial: a near-black canvas, gold accents used sparingly like candlelight, and oversized Playfair Display headlines set against a full-bleed, full-height hero photograph. Every section follows a deliberate rhythm — trust signals right under the hero CTAs, dishes before story, story before process — so a visitor is always one scroll away from context and one click away from booking. All photography was art-directed to match the room's actual mood: low-key, warm, photorealistic. The reservation form sits in its own dramatic CTA band with date, time, party size, and occasion fields, so the restaurant receives everything it needs to confirm a table in one step.
Design highlights
The hero pairs a cinematic, candlelit dining-room photograph with a left-aligned oversized serif headline, a gold italic accent word, and dual calls to action backed by a star-rating trust line. A press-mention trust bar in serif text logos adds credibility without clutter. Signature dishes are presented as editorial cards with course labels (Second Course, Main, Dessert) instead of prices, keeping the focus on craft. The chef section uses a split layout with a gold offset frame around the portrait. The four-step "Your evening" band — Reserve, Aperitif, Tasting, Dessert — sells the experience before asking for anything, and the reservation band closes with both a form and a prominent phone number.
Outcome
The finished site reads like an invitation to the dining room: atmospheric enough to attract the right guests, structured enough to convert them. The reservation flow takes under a minute end to end, the story and menu answer every question a first-time guest typically has before booking, and the design gives the restaurant a distinctive, ownable identity that stands apart from template restaurant sites.
