Challenge

Ember Grill is a West Loop steakhouse built around a single idea — everything touches oak fire — but its website looked like every other steakhouse: dark, generic, and interchangeable. The restaurant needed a site that felt like the room — candlelit, primal, unhurried — while doing serious business work: communicating the dry-aging program, selling the private Hearth Room, and converting curiosity into reservations. The design had to be dramatic without being gloomy, and premium without feeling stiff.

Approach

We built a dark-premium editorial site around fire itself: charcoal backgrounds, ember-red accents used like glowing coals, and Playfair Display headlines set against full-bleed, low-key photography of steak over open flame. The content rhythm mirrors a great dinner — experience first, then the cuts, then the chef's story, then the craft — with reservations always one click away. All photography was art-directed for the room's actual mood: dark, warm, and elemental. The reservation experience was designed to mirror the restaurant's own hospitality: phone-forward, form-light, and personal — because a steakhouse that cooks over open flame shouldn't book tables like a software company.

Design highlights

The hero pairs a cinematic steak-over-flames photograph with an oversized serif headline and an ember-red italic accent, backed by dual CTAs and a press-trust line. A press-mention trust bar in serif wordmarks adds credibility. Signature cuts are presented with gradient swatches and aging-grade labels (60-Day Aged, Wagyu, For Two) rather than prices, keeping focus on craft. The chef section uses an offset ember frame around the portrait, and the four-step "pasture to plate" band closes the story before the reservation CTA.

Outcome

The site reads like an invitation to the dining room: atmospheric enough to attract the right guests, structured enough to convert them. The fire-first story differentiates Ember Grill from every generic steakhouse competitor, and the reservation flow — form-free, phone-forward — matches how the restaurant actually takes bookings. It's a site with a point of view, which is what premium dining websites need most.
