Chai House — Traditional Indian Tea House Website
Heritage-rich website for Chai House of Edison, NJ — warm photography, three generations of chai craft, and a community-first layout for tea lovers.
Challenge
Chai House is a traditional Indian tea house on Oak Tree Road with recipes going back to 1962, but its website was a bare-bones page that said nothing about the heritage, the craft, or the community nights that make the place special. The tea house needed a site as warm as the room: one that explains why a cup takes twelve minutes, honors three generations of brewing, and invites both the Indian diaspora and the merely curious. The design had to feel authentically Indian without resorting to stereotype.
Approach
We designed a heritage-classic site: ivory backgrounds, chai-brown accents, Marcellus headlines, and warm natural-light photography of brass kettles and the lantern-lit interior. A subtle mandala SVG motif opens the main section. The menu reads like a family album — each chai with its story (the founder's mother's recipe, the Mumbai original). The four-step brew process makes the twelve-minute cup tangible, and community nights (poetry, ghazals, festivals) get equal billing with the menu, because they're equal parts of the business.
Design highlights
The hero pairs golden chai-pour photography with a Marcellus headline and a gold accent word, backed by dual CTAs. The chai menu uses story-led cards — each with a category label (The Classic, House Signature, Slow Brewed) and a one-line origin. The heritage section frames the interior photograph like a family portrait with the founder's signature. The brew process (Crush, Simmer, Milk, Pour) is set on deep chai-brown, and testimonials carry voices from Edison's Indian community, including the line every heritage business wants: "Tastes like my grandmother's kitchen."
Outcome
The site honors the heritage without freezing it in amber — it feels lived-in, warm, and welcoming to newcomers while giving regulars the depth they crave. Visitors understand the craft behind the cup, the community behind the room, and exactly when to show up. It's a tea house site with genuine soul, which can't be templated.
