Challenge

Crust & Craft is a family-run Austin bakery with a loyal morning crowd but a website that looked like an afterthought: a single page, no menu, no pre-ordering, and nothing conveying the joy of the place. The bakery needed a site as warm and playful as the shop itself — one that shows off the daily case, explains the slow-fermentation craft, and makes pre-ordering for pickup effortless. The design had to feel handcrafted rather than corporate, without tipping into clip-art territory.

Approach

We leaned into playful-rounded design with discipline: warm cream backgrounds, caramel accents, Quicksand typography, and soft blob shapes used consistently as the visual language — never as decoration for its own sake. The hero is built entirely in CSS/SVG: floating pastry cards and sticker chips that communicate "fresh at 7am" and "stone-milled flour" at a glance. The menu section reads like the actual bakery case, the process section tells the 48-hour sourdough story in four friendly steps, and testimonials carry real neighborhood voices.

Design highlights

The hero pairs a huge friendly headline with pure-CSS pastry cards — a sourdough loaf, a croissant, a cupcake — each with playful rotation and soft shadows, plus floating trust chips. A caramel trust bar states the bakery's non-negotiables (butter, never shortening; 48-hour ferment). The menu grid uses color-coded swatches per category, and the process cards use numbered badges in a chunky, friendly style. Rounded corners are used everywhere at a consistent radius, giving the whole site a cohesive, handcrafted feel.

Outcome

The site now matches the bakery's personality: warm, a little cheeky, and clearly run by people who love bread. Visitors can see what's in the case, understand why the sourdough takes 48 hours, and pre-order for pickup — all without the site ever feeling like a template. The playful visual system is distinctive enough to be recognizable at a glance, which is exactly what a neighborhood bakery needs.
