Spice Route — Single-Origin Spice E-Commerce Website
Editorial e-commerce site for Spice Route — single-origin spice storytelling, farm-traceable sourcing, and a shop-first layout built for curious cooks.
Challenge
Spice Route sells genuinely differentiated spices — stone-ground weekly, single-origin, traceable to twelve farms — but its website read like a commodity shop: product grids with no story. The brand needed an e-commerce site that teaches visitors why fresh spice matters, tells the farm stories, and converts curiosity into first orders. The design had to feel like a spice market (rich, warm, abundant) while staying clean enough to shop.
Approach
We built an editorial spice site: warm cream backgrounds, paprika and turmeric accents, Fraunces serif headlines, and rich market photography of spice mounds and burlap sacks. The homepage follows a teaching arc — the freshness difference, the three starter spices with origin labels and CSS jar visuals, the farm-sourcing story, the harvest-to-kitchen process — so visitors understand the value before they shop. Every product claim is concrete: grind dates, farm names, curcumin percentages. The founder's Kerala story gives the brand its origin. A starter-set framing lowers the first-order barrier, and subscriptions are positioned for the converted — the natural second purchase after the first jar runs out.
Design highlights
The hero pairs vibrant spice-market photography with an oversized serif headline and turmeric italic accent. The collection uses pure-CSS spice jars in origin-tinted swatches with fill levels, origin labels (Lakadong, Aleppo, Sri Lanka), and tasting-note copy. The sourcing story section uses market photography with the founder's signature. The four-step process (Harvest, Ship, Grind, Seal) sits on deep brown, and the trust bar carries food-press wordmarks. The whole site smells like the product: warm, rich, and abundant.
Outcome
The site teaches before it sells — visitors arrive curious and leave understanding why grind dates matter. The farm-traceability storytelling differentiates Spice Route from every commodity spice brand, and the starter-set framing lowers the first-order barrier. It's an e-commerce site with an editorial heart, which is exactly what a story-rich product needs.
